Fortnite Android Performance Issues being ‘Investigated’ by Epic

The Fortnite Android beta is now available to a wider range of Android users. Developer Epic Games has opened up the beta tests from beyond Samsung Galaxy devices, giving more people on the mobile platform a chance to get their hands on the game. Unfortunately, the beta tests are running less than smoothly.

Some Fortnite Android players have reported significant performance problems with the game. In a post on Twitter, Epic Games said that the issues are unique to Android users with mobile devices that have 4GB of RAM.

The problems are a result of players having “multiple background applications running,” which leaves the device without enough memory to play the game properly. While it sounds as though Fortnite players may be able to address the issue by closing apps in the background, Epic Games is still investigating the issue and working on a fix.

Fortnite players on Android may be disappointed with this news, especially as it means that the beta testing period could go on for longer than expected. Epic has also noted that Android beta invites are being sent out in waves, meaning that the floodgates are not yet open for everyone to play. If Epic has to extend the beta in order to iron out fixes, it could mean it takes longer to get everyone through the door.

Others will just be glad that this issue showed up so soon into the beta testing period. It’s no secret that the game has been designed with high-end handsets in mind. Prior to the Android beta, Epic founder and CEO Tim Sweeney said that the game would only work properly on an estimated 12% of all Android devices. The executive explained that this is because the developer wants to maintain the same high-quality gameplay across all platforms. While this may be the case, it makes optimizing the game for all devices (even those that have a few apps in the background) all the more important.

Ultimately, the point of a beta test is to diagnose and address issues like these. The game wouldn’t have been so successful on PC, consoles or iOS (where it makes almost $2 million a day)  if it also had performance issues like this. Epic will want to get the Android version of its game off to as strong a start as possible and the beta will help the developer do that.

Fortnite is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and iOS devices. An Android beta is currently taking place.
